The Utopian and the Dystopian

The question often comes to me when I’m speaking at libraries and civic groups around the state: “Why are there no utopian novels nowadays?”

I believe the utopian impulse still exists, only in a fashion so modified as to be nearly unrecognizable, but it is true that utopian novels in the vein of Herland or A Traveler from Altruria don’t come out these days. Instead, the dominant literary fashion is dystopian – especially, oddly enough, in books aimed at teenage readers.

The classic utopian novels were designed to present a critique of existing society and an alternative to the ills of that society. Today’s dystopian novels, to some extent, engage in that same critique, but instead of an alternative, they predict the dire future that awaits us if our current ills are not addressed.

The utopian novel arises from faith in human progress; the dystopian novel from its lack.

The utopian novel imagines that our better natures are held down by a faulty social structure; the dystopian novel imagines that the faulty social structure arises from our inner faults.

The absence of utopian novels shouldn’t be construed, though, as a complete absence of faith in human nature. We should remember that the utopian novel also existed as an intellectual argument, and the novel today is much less about argument and more about action. It’s intrinsically more exciting to read about a society in ruins, and the independent survivors who live in its ashes, than about a harmonious society that has solved its problems.

The utopian impulse still exists, though, and I think it has turned inward. What’s one of the largest sections of the bookstore? “Self-help.” We are bombarded with solutions . . . not for the ills of our society, but for those of ourselves. We can, the authors promise us, make ourselves perfect. Or at least darn close.

Emory Styron of River Hills Traveler recently conducted an interview with me about Slant of Light, its origins and themes, the Ozarks in general, and I don’t know what else. We had a great time chatting, and I was delighted to find such a discerning reader and sympathetic listener. Here’s a link to the River Hills Traveler video interview.

May I just add that copies of the novel are available from their bookstore!

It was a pleasant afternoon at Shawnee Books & Toys yesterday as I visited with a few curious people who stopped by. Didn’t do much in the way of selling, but I enjoyed the company. Slant of Light sets several of its opening chapters in Kansas, but I’ll have to admit to feeling less sure of myself in my descriptions in that section — they were mainly taken from lengthy research into original sources and only a little direct observation. Thankfully, none of the Kansans I’ve talked to yet have found any glaring errors.

Booksellers are special people. Yesterday I did an author signing at the Lake of the Ozarks and was reminded of that fact. Sarah, the manager (not in the picture), welcomed me warmly, and clerks Jenae and Gramella rung up people’s purchases with friendliness and ease. A teenager came to the counter looking for the third book of a trilogy; Jenae knew its name and location in the store instantly.

The online booksellers have the advantage of convenience; but a store, a real brick-and-mortar store, offers that human interaction and relationship so painfully missing from much of our life.

This weekend I’ll be doing readings/signings at the Quincy Unitarian Church on Friday evening and at Great Debate Books on Saturday afternoon. Although I am not living in Quincy now, I still consider it “home” and still love to visit the church–in fact, I’ve never transferred my membership out of it, despite my departure. When the folks at the church heard that my book was coming out, they immediately wanted to put on a celebration–so that’s what this will be! Wine and cheese and hors d’oeuvres, with a brief reading and lots of happy conversations.

Then for those who prefer Saturdays, a signing in a more traditional location: Great Debate Books, an independent bookstore at the corner of Sixth and Maine. Looking forward to both events!

The official launch of Slant of Light will happen on April 19 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Subterranean Books, 6275 Delmar, in University City (on the Delmar Loop). The location is a bit serendipitous . . . a former student of mine from the 1990s is married to an employee there, so the connection was made.

That weekend, those of you who are attending the Missouri Writers’ Guild conference in St. Louis can pick up a copy there . . . I’ll be signing books on Friday, the 20th, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

If my Hannibal/Canton/Quincy friends can hold out till May, there will be at least one event up there. Working with the dear folks at the Unitarian Church for a wine & cheese party/book reading & signing . . . specific date and time to be announced.
