~ News, announcements, events, and ruminations about my books, including Slant of Light, This Old World, The Language of Trees, and Scattered Lights, and about creativity, fiction, Missouri, the Ozarks, and anything else that strikes my fancy
Steve and I have talked and concur this is likely an early photo of Big Spring. (Note the rocks, bluffs and fuzzy water in the foreground.) This photo was taken before this parcel left public domain–the spring was not purchased from the government until 1913. It only remained in private hands for about 11 or 12 years–it was sold to the state of Missouri for one of the first state parks in 1924-25, then transferred to back to the federal government/National Park Service in 1970. It is one of few parcels in Missouri that has had only brief private ownership.
